Signs of Pregnancy in Your Cat

Every cat owner can vouch for the fact that taking care of a kitty is quite a hassle-free responsibility that you take up. If you have them neutered, your life as a cat owner is much easier. You can let your cat out in the garden without fear of it disappearing and later finding out that your cat is pregnant with kittens.

But if you own a pair, then you need to be extra vigilant in their care. When the female gets pregnant with kitties, there are a few signs that you should look out for. We aim to help you observe those signs consciously to help you understand that your cats are expecting kittens. Here are some tips and tricks to help you take better care of the cats and their kittens.
  • Heat cycle: Cats enter heat on the clockwork when they’re not pregnant and you can observe their behaviour when they’re on heat. This behaviour will change once they’re pregnant, and you should observe this change of behaviour keenly.
  • Appetite: Like with women, pregnant cats observe an increased appetite and yowl for more food very often.
  • Darkened nipples: During their period of expectancy, cats’ nipples will swell up and “pink up” in colour. However, this season is not usually visible for cats with greater fur.
  • Weight: Of course, when your cat will be housing kittens in her, she is bound to gain weight. Her gain in weight will be pretty evident physically.
  • Nesting behaviour: In the final stages of her pregnancy, your cat will start looking for a secluded place to give birth in, and if it’s in the house it’s mostly in the corner beneath your bed, or behind the cupboard or some open-air hidden area of your closet.
  • Affection: A pregnant cat goes through a lot of hormonal change, and because of that, many owners have reported more affectionate behaviour from their cats.
  • Tests: For quicker, and certain results, you can take your cat to the vet and have it scanned. That way, you can know for sure that your cat is expecting, and won’t rely on signs that your cat shows over time.
Now that you’ve observed all these signs in your cat, and have concluded that your cat is indeed pregnant, what should you do about it? How do you take care of it?

Well, for starters, take care of her diet. Make sure it gets complete nutrition. Take your cat to the vet regularly to ensure that everything is progressing smoothly and that your cat is not growing unhealthy in any way.

When you’re sure that cat is pregnant, try to facilitate it in every way you can. Don’t put too much stress on the cat. Make sure she's comfortable wherever she sleeps. Try to ready a nice secluded spot for her to go snuggle when she’s ready to go into labour. Make sure it gets all the supplements it needs. Most of all shower her with love and you will soon get some cute but alien looking baby cats that will make sure you receive that love right back.
