Most Common Mistakes with Cat Feeding
Bringing up your kitty can be a tough part of your life if you’re new to it. In the first few days, you’ll be stressing over every move that your kitty makes to make sure that it stays healthy, and is comfortable. In this time of stress, you are bound to make some mistakes, which although is natural, can become messy for your kitty. The most common mistakes are related to a kitty’s feeding habits. Therefore, here is a guide for you to avoid those mistakes to help your kitty develop and grow well.
Overfeeding: Apart from the time clashes, do give your cat a measured amount that is right for them. It is very easy to go overboard and feed them per your wishes, but it can lead to several health problems in your kitty including obesity, and arthritis. Consult your vet and give it a good, balanced amount of food, with the occasional healthy treats to give with it.
Dry Food: Some owners only feed their cat dry food. It may fulfil their nutrition but it can also be damaging to their kidneys at the same time. Digesting dry food like that requires fluids from the cat’s body which leads to kidney stones due to lack of water. It is recommended that your cat not be always fed dry food, and when it is given dry food, do place a bowl of water so that it keeps up its fluid level.
Tapeworms: Cats sometimes house tapeworms in their small intestine, and some people add garlic in their normal diet to eliminate their presence. Please don’t do that as no evidence suggests that garlic is an effective treatment against these parasites. Instead, consult your vet and make sure your kitty gets the required vaccines/medicine for itself. Tapeworms may not be life-threatening but they can be the cause of weakness and weight loss in your kitty.
Vegetarian diet: Cats are carnivores. Period. They are not like dogs who can also eat vegetables instead of meat. Cats need proteins and amino acids to thrive, and you putting them on a vegetarian diet is not helping them at all.
Homemade diet: If you want to make your cat food instead of buying it, make sure you know that you’re doing it right. Ask your vet for the complete nutrition your cat requires.
