Can Dogs Eat Fruits and Vegetables?

So now, you’ve got a pup, got it all vaccinated and it’s ready to be a part of your family. But one big question lingers on your mind; what do I feed my pup? Your first thought would be dog food; dog food is the answer to all your feeding-related problems. But then you go to the pet store, and for many dog-owners, it just isn’t sustainable for your budget to buy monthly dog food supplies.

Your thoughts then turn to get meat. But you realize that for your pup’s ideal growth, the meat will not fulfil its nutritional requirements. That leaves you asking, can I feed my dog fruits and the greens?

The answer is, yes! You certainly can feed your dog a lot of nature’s produce. This post aims to bring to light what fruits and vegetable dogs usually like, and how to feed them in a way acceptable to their digestive tracts.

  • Apples: “An apple a day keeps the doctor/vet away.” A truer word could not have been spoken as these are a rich source of Vitamins A & C and fibres that are good for your digestive tract. Just be sure to give them to your dog without the seeds and core.

  • Bananas: Bananas are rich in potassium, vitamins and copper and they can provide good nutrition to your dog. They are also very sweet, and since dogs have a big sweet tooth, they should be fed bananas occasionally as treats only.

  • Blueberries: They are full of antioxidants, and can be very effective for your dog’s system against cancer.

  • Broccoli: This green veggie is full of fibrous content, and is good for your dog’s nutrition in small elements. Remember, excessive amounts of it can lead to diarrhoea.

  • Carrots: Being high in vitamins and fibre, carrots are good for your dogs and brush away tartar from your dog’s teeth.

  • Cucumbers: Cucumbers are good low-calorie snacks for your pup, and most dogs love to chew up a cucumber now and then. However, never feed it in excess, as it can cause an upset stomach.

  • Mango: The king of all fruits. Since dogs have a big sweet tooth, they very much enjoy mangoes and it can serve as a treat for them now and then. Remember to move the stone from them as your dog can potentially choke on it.

  • Oranges: They are also a good source of vitamin C for your dog, and they love them. Just remember to remove large seeds to avoid choking hazards.

  • Potato: If your dog has an upset stomach and you don’t know what to give your dog to eat, you can 100% feed them a boiled potato. It is not only rich in carbohydrates, but it is also easy on their digestive tracts. Dogs also like potatoes with boiled chicken normally.

  • Please note the above tips are add-ons to your dog’s diet. We in no way recommend you feed your pet with fruits and veggies only but find a good balanced diet that works for your pup as well as your budget.
